Come to the Welding Workshop with the FLG!

Interested in working with the Flaming Lotus Girls on the next
master-piece or should I say mistress-piece??? Well the time has come
to
get in on this years projectl! On saturday April 19th and saturday
April
26th at noon we are offering welding fire and shop 101 for the next
wave
of Flaming Lotus Girls!!! No prior shop skills necessary, just a desire

to come on board and put some sweat equity into the next creation to
come from the sexiest group of pyros alive!!!

Here's the deal....

On april 19th and 26th at noon, gals (and guys) interested in working
on
this years project in any capacity (big or small/ grinding or typing or

wiring) are welcome to come by the Box Shop and get an intro to mig
welding, use of common tools and a fire effects intro as well as
preview
of this year project. If you come please be sincere in wanting to help
out. Also we ask for a twenty dollar donation to go to the shop for use

of materials and energy.

Please be sure to wear non synthetic clothing. Cotton, denim and
tightly
knit clothes will do fine. Please no fleeces or plastic like material
as
they can be highly flammable!! bring clothes that cover your arms and
legs as well as closed-toed shoes. Be aware that what ever you wear in
a
metal shop will likely be ruined along with electronics (ipods and
laptops at your own risk!) Lonh hair and loose clothing with hanging
stuff is dangerous! Keep it tight! I also recommend bringing your own
bottle of drinking water as there is none available. Come to both
classes if you like or just one, we will try to cover the same stuff in

each however you never know what will unexpectedly happen at the
shop...

The box shop is home to many artists...not just FLG!!! respect their
space and please don't park in front of active driveways or gates!!!

>From 101 north or south: take the Cesar Chavez exit and follow signs

Go 1/4 mile on Cesar Chavez east to the Evans Ave traffic light.

odometer, you are now 1.6 miles from the Box Shop.
On Evans Ave, you'll pass a power plant, then the road curves to the
right, then you'll pass the India Basin Shoreline Park.
Immediately after India Basin Shoreline Park and before a fork in the
road, turn left onto Hudson Ave, a dirt road. You'll see a large
hand-painted sign high up on a shipping container poking above the
fence
that reads "The Box Shop".
On Hudson Ave, the Box Shop is the first yard on the right.
Consider diagonal parking on Hudson Ave or back out and park in front
of
the church across the street.

The Bay Area Derby Girls meet the Flaming Lotus Girls this Sunday in San Francisco for calendar signing, photos, and some yummy complementary BBQ while it lasts.

The Box Shop will host this massive collision of girl power as the Derby Girls roll into San Francisco and converge on the secret laboratories of the Lotus Girls.

The B.ay A.rea D.erby Girls are a full contact, all female, flat-track roller derby league consisting of three teams: The San Francisco ShEvil Dead, The Oakland Outlaws, and The Richmond Wrecking Belles.

What an incredible experience!
It was such an honor to work with such a dedicated and talented crew. The Serpent Mother really blew peoples minds and put fire in their hearts. The Robodock crew were really supportive and wonderful to us. Much thanks to them and for all the love from Amsterdam!

I'm sure as soon as we start to recover from the wicked jet lag we will all start to post ours.
Sharing our art and our passion across the ocean was really an incredible experience and beyond. Thank you so much to all who helped

Crude Awakening clean-up crew needs help

Dan Das Mann requested that I share this message in the hope that their team can get help from some willing folks here.

The Crude Awakening (oil derrick burn) project needs some fresh clean up crew members. Their massive fire works show and burn left an equally massive clean-up project. With Tuesday afternoon/night’s fierce white-out, and the near daily dust storms following the burn, their crew is frazzled, shelled and needs help.

If you are a fan of Dan/Karen and their team’s work, and can spare to commit a week minimum on playa to help with their clean-up, they will pay you $80/day and feed you as well. Please report to Che at the Devil’s Workshop and Day Spa camp (5:10 and Esplanade) or to the Crude Awakening site.

Their power grid is still up, and when I left playa last night, wifi was still working, so a little bit of creature comforts still exist. You’ll need typical playa camp gear or an RV and work clothes.

I don't have any further details about contacts or confirmations; Dan and I spoke about the project and their clean-up needs during the height of the white out

Shagadelica is recruiting volunteers to finish building its outrageous design this year. Our warehouse is 10 minutes from SF in Oakland. SHAGADELICA WILL CAMP AT THE DEEP END.

Shagadelica is a convertible double decker bus that will be wrapped up with glowing fur (basically back lighted with 300,000 LEDs that can change colors) See www.glowfur.com/. All inside, outside and ceiling surfaces will be covered and the inside of the first level will be outfitted in high end limo style and the open upstairs will have a DJ booth, 10,000W of sound, a 1.5W laser, a slide, a round bed shaped like a UFO and mounted on a hydraulic platform that can lift and rotate the bed 15 feet from the second story and a ride composed of a cluster of giant helium balloons that will fly someone connected to the bus about 100 feet in the air ;-) Oh, I forgot, we also have a concert truss frame on top where 2 giant arms extend from outside the bus and lift 2 dances cages outfitted with porn stars or whoever you want really… As if it wasn’t enough, we have a 16 feet trailer that carry a 5,000 lbs generator that can power Dallas and has room for storage, a bike rack and a landing pad for our Gopher Glowfur Vehicle (GGV), our useful little furry vehicle that can go and pick up people to bring them to party central!

Lost a black rabbit fur coat at ocean beach last night...

For the fire bloom burn we had. I was so warm around the fire that I left with out the coat...it had a fake furry hat inside of the pocket as well.

In 2007, we’ve got great plans for Illumination Village. This year, like last, we're asking for $50 from each camper. If $50 still seems cheap, we'd gladly put whatever additional funds you can contribute to good use.

I’ve requested Esplanade and 3:00-5:00 placement next door to The Devil’s Workshop and Day Spa, and it looks like we’ll be good, if the little birdie I’ve heard from is accurate. Burningman was impressed with how the Village looked and felt last year, they seem excited about the submitted 2007 plans. 2007 will be a lot like last year, with a tight, organized layout, art up front, interactive stuff on the esplanade. We’ll have a lot of big fire projects across from the village entry on the playa side, and Dr. HiHor has been working on a new village entry gate that incorporates propane.

For our space, I’ve requested a single 300’ frontage by 250’ side road spot. This would be slightly larger than our frontage last year, but without the back annex; I think we’ll need that frontage to fit all the projects we have going on. Ill Vill will be providing power 24/7, have showers of some fashion, and will even have some swanky metal medallions for villagers.

Coming back over

So I decided that I had to come back for the second outing of the Serpent Mom. The big monster isnt getting away from me that easy!

I arrive on 17th June from London, enough time to get some hard labour in at the boxshop and then enjoy the fun and frolics at FAF, cruise around till my birthday, celebrate it for a few days and then head home to get my head down earning cash and getting settled for the final year! No burn for me this year. I just cant manage it. I dont need it either. I need to be with you and that crazy big snake we built.

I cant wait to play with all you guys again. And there will be some play. All work and no play last year made FLG very knackered girls.

FLAMING LOTUS GIRLS OPEN HOUSE AND WELDING WORKSHOPS

Do you want to join the Flaming Lotus Girls and work on our Serpent Mother sculpture? We are holding 3 open houses and welding workshops at our shop – the BoxShop in San Francisco , Hunters Point in May/June 2007.

This is an opportunity for you to come and meet FLGs, get an introduction to the shop and learn how to weld. Please send this on to anyone else who might be interested.

WHAT WE WILL BE TEACHING:

Basic Shop Safety

MIG Welding 101 – personal safety gear (helmet, gloves), run through of the machines, welding practice

Metal Shop Tools and how to use them -- grinders, chop saws, drills, plasma cutters, oxyacetylene torch

This class is good for absolute beginners, AND people who have welded a little in the past, but need a refresher course.

WHEN ARE THE WORKSHOPS

Thursday May 24th 7.00PM-10.00PM

Sunday May 27th 1.00PM- 4.00PM

SERPENT MOTHER WORLD TOUR AND WHY WE ARE DOING THIS

FLG’s 2007 project is updating and expanding our sculpture, serpent mother, for a whirlwind world tour!

We’re displaying her in at the Fire Arts Festival, July 2007 and then putting her on a boat for the robodock festival in Amsterdam , September 2007

She needs lots and lots of love after her Burning Man debut last year, including adding copper cartiledge, fixing her Head, upgrading the Egg and upgrading the electronic controls for the poofers and LEDs.

We’re looking for help in June/July getting her ready and running – contact us if you are interested in help!

i heard a rumor that some peoples are trying to get the serpent mother out to flipside, the austin regional burn. i imagine that must be quite a task! i am moving back to san francsico at the end of the month (ive been in NYC for almost 7 years) and will be going to flipside again this year - i love it! it would be fantastic to see the serpent mother there. please let me know if there is anything i can do to help with this. i would like to get involved with FLG once i move :)

Working with the Flaming Lotus Girls this year has become something hard to describe to those that do not know. There are just too many adjectives to use for my time with you and your friends this year.

It is hard to come up with a decent end of year party that will cap what i have been up to. Maybe 2007 will bring me back to your fine and very funky selves for some more grease, dirt and grime enveloped in smatterings of sunshine and sparkles.

Casting For a Discovery Show - Looking for Women Builders/Electronics Wizards
Message Hi Tasha,

I found out about the Flaming Lotus Girls from Justin Gray and Scott Gasparian,
and am trying to make contact with women builders and electronics experts. I am
currently helping to cast a new Discovery Channel show called
'Prototype This'. The show will bring together a team of young
scientists and builders who will combine their skills and ideas to
dream up, design and manufacture technological inventions which meet
some kind of everyday need or want. The inventions could be in any
field – home, work, leisure, sport etc. The only limit is our
imagination, skill set and enthusiasm.

We're looking for at least 2 people; ideally:

1. An electronics wizard, hopefully with some building skills. Women
very welcome.
2. A crack builder. Women also very welcome.

Or some combo thereof.

As a group, our hosts will have a wide and deep range of skills and
smarts, from robotics through mechanical engineering to electronics.
Some may have recently completed PhDs or Masters; others may have
never been near college but are brilliant and creative model makers or
builders. All candidates need to know their way around a workshop and
be able to bring more than just blue-sky thinking to the table. We
want tinkerers – people who love to build crazy stuff for the hell of
it.

The show will be very "hands on" – the entertainment will be in
watching our team battle with the problems inherent in fast-track
prototyping and overcome them to at least achieve a proof of concept
by the end of the episode. And seeing if the thing actually works.

If you think you might be interested or know anyone else who might,
please contact me. We're looking at doing a casting session on
September 25, so time is short.

Thanks for sharing your appreciation of this project. Seeing the fire in everyones eyes has really made all the hard work on this project worth while.
I personally have been living the Fear and Hope ( as much as I usually hate the themes ). I have felt the fierceness and the love, the guardian and the potential.... throughout this whole process. From conception, gestation, and through creation the Serpent Mother has grown me into new levels of strength. I have experienced how we can create what seems impossible when we work together. I have experienced what I can do in my life if I really want to. I embrace the kind of fear the Serpent Mother instills for it is this ferocious firey eyed flamed fanged creature that we each have inside. This part of us has the ability to defend our dreams and guard our chance at a future that is beyond what we can even see now. We each also hold in our hearts the Egg. The potential for great things still to come.
There are layers of this whole experience that I get into more each day. The whole thing is just more than a person can soak up all at once. Thanks again to all of you whole got the complexities of images of the Serpent Mother. Thanks to all of you who appreciated the crazy work and intricate details of wiring, plumbing, fabricating, etc... And, thank you to those of you who just loved the warm fire and pushing our buttons. You all made it so worth it!

Standing it up in the yard has been amazing. We have talked about the size of it. We have made millions of vertebrae. but she is now actually beginning to materialize in front of us in her huge form.

This is a huge and slightly crazy project which i am so happy to be involved in.

Great work with FAF btw :) Serpent mother totally rocked.
Anywho, Brendan (my bf) and I are on the early arrival list to BM (sat the 26th) and are camping with DDI (dance dance immolation). We are looking for a ride -- Wendy suggested I post here -- either a ride with someone or to share a rental or something of the sort. We would optimally like to come back to SF area before the burn (like leave on thurs or fri) so we can avoid traffic and get a chance to decompress before returning to work. Any help would be great!!!

Flaming Lotus Followup from the Fire Arts Festival

Hello Lotus Lovers!

We had such a great time showing off the Serpent Mother at the Fire Arts Festival last week. There's a lot of work to do for Burning Man though! To make it happen, we are looking for volunteers to work on the project and donations to help fund it. Check out the bottom of this email.

I'm tellin' yah, you haven't seen nuffum yet! If you spoke to us about the Serpent Mother at the Fire Arts Festival, you probably got to hear us gush about our full plans for Burning Man. First, we only brought 1/6th of her to FAF! You didn't get to see her giant copper egg either. There are a LOT of other components that you'll love!

"How" you ask, "do a bunch of artists put together such a massive project?"
"Well" I answer, "love for the art, teamwork, sweat, enthusiasm, skill, and camaraderie."

You see, we've been working down at The Box Shop most evenings and weekends since February or so. Things have been heating up in the last few months with our deadline looming near. Every night the shop it abuzz with activity. Last night I saw the Vertebrae peeps welding, grinding and polishing verts. The Plumbers working on a new poofer effect for the fangs. We want you to be a part of building the coolest freaking 170'-long interactive flaming stainless steel animatronic serpent you've ever seen in your life!

If you're reasonably sane and you can devote a few nights each week for the next few weeks, we can teach you how to do a whole lotta cool stuff in the course of putting this beautiful beast together. I should also say that the group is partial to having women join, though men aren't often turned away. It is, after all, the Flaming Lotus GIRLS.

Show up at The Box Shop any weeknight evening at 7:30pm or weekend day at 1pm til August 20th or so. Tug on someone's arm and we'll definitely find something rewarding for you to do to help put her together.

If you can't lift a grinder or plumb a poofer, you can also help us by making a donation. While the sculpture received a sizable grant from Burning Man, and all of the work is being done by volunteer artists, the materials in the Serpent Mom are still rather expensive. Got Kerosene?

Attn FLG: I just got news that Bonny Doon Vineyard has at least one 55 gallon drum, perhaps more, of kerosene. They were using it as part of the distillery, and no longer have a need for it. The fuel is at least a year or more old, but get this - it's free if you can haul it away... Does FLG need this for the Serpent Mother?

I just wanted to say that I was totally impressed by the Serpent Mum last night at the Fire Arts Festival. That's a SERIOUS piece of engineering, and it worked perfectly (at least from the audience view). I know how quickly it came together -- and I can guess at how much work that took. I really liked watching people play the poofers -- everyone had a big grin. So: impressive art, science and teamwork. I look forward to seeing it on the playa!

In 2006, we’re building a better Illumination Village, while
supporting the old school village we love. To fund our village
plans, we need to up the ante. In previous years we’ve asked for
ridiculously small contributions. Last year, for instance, the
request was that each camper contributed $15. Wow, that’s what it
costs to park in a garage in downtown SF for a couple of hours...

This year, we’re asking for $50 from each camper. If $50 still seems
cheap, we’d gladly put whatever additional funds you can contribute
to good use.

This year we are trying to purchase a generator for the Village. We
have already acquired the cables & spider boxes – thanks to several

range), whisper quiet diesel generator at auction. The auctions are
happening now. Illumination Village camping fees are due to

immediately in order to make this happen and we’re counting on you,

The legacy of Illumination Village

2006 is the Illumination Village’s 12th anniversary on the playa.
Over those last dozen years Illumination Village has become a
community. It’s an active community of wickedly dedicated artists,
and hardcore fans of fire. It’s a village that’s incredibly cool to
be a part of. We’re a powerful force on the playa; building,
supporting and burning some of the best and biggest art the playa
has ever seen. The Illumination Village is old school fire. We bring
fuel, we bring energy, we bring art, and we burn it. BRC loves what
we do, loves that we keep the big fires burning, loves that we mix
fire and steel. We’ve built a reputation over the years, and this
year we’re adding powerful new legends to that legacy.

A team of us are putting the proposal together, asking for a huge
plot of space so we can be less cramped than last year. We’ve
developed a map to justify our request and layout some roads for
better vehicle access, a bikeway to get back into our camps, and of
course, an esplanade keyhole full of sculpture and fire. We’ll have
dedicated areas for small tents, buses and parking, with zones for
performance projects, art projects, art cars and large scale
sculptures. We’ll be on the esplanade and dedicating the frontage to
show all of BRC what we bring to the playa. Plus we’ll be investing
in infrastructure so we don’t keep tossing money away on wickedly
expensive rentals of generators and power grids. It’ll be an amazing
village, our home on the playa, but we need your help. Please send
your camping fees now!

Healing, Dance, Nudity: Performances and Workshops!

Greetings!

I have been dancing with the Dandelion Dancetheater for the past 4 years. We are once again creating a work that has at its core ideas of nudity, art, body image, human relationship, impermance and love. For those of you who are curious or who have seen our work before please consider joining us this summer.

Welding Workshops for new FLG recruits!

We are going to need a small army to build the Serpent Mother this summer! So, if you're interested in working with the Flaming Lotus Girls now is your chance. Don't know much about working with metal? Come on down and we'll teach you. These classes are for folks who would like to help us with this project, so we are offering them for dirt cheap. $5-$20 sound good? That's right you heard me. These kinds of classes normally cost hundreds. Classes will be held the last three weekends in april...the weekends of the 15th, 22nd, and 29th. Each class will be a little different, but you can take one of them or all.
The classes will focus on saftey, mig welding, grinding, plasma cutting, set up and clean up of the shop and possible torch cutting.
We also meet every wednesday evening at the Box Shop at 7:30, if you can come this wednesday please do. So, come on down!
